21 Jul Telling a Cafe Racer, Bobber and Scrambler apart
Many speed junkies would be able to recite the differences between a Café Racer, a Bobber or a racing Scrambler. However, there are many who still have trouble telling them apart. There exist many custom bike models, of course, but as these 3 are the most popular ones, we work on them more often.
Cafe Racer. As specialists in Cafe Racer in Valencia, we drool over this type of bike. The history of Café Racer goes back to England in the ‘50s when speed lovers used to strip down old racing bikes to make them as light and as fast as possible. Once the bike was ready, they’d race each other from bar to bar or from café to café. Hence, the name Café Racer. To spot a Café Racer you must look at the steering, as these bikes usually have low-mounted handlebars. Other key features are the trumpet exhaust muffler pipe/ inlet trumpet carburettor/ reverse cone megaphone mufflers, cradle type frame, and the single seat cowl, aligned with the fuel tank and rearsets.
Bobber. On the other hand, Bobber bikes are Harley Davidson, Triumph or Indian type motorbikes. This fierce style was born in the ‘40s in the USA and they are meant to symbolise a free-spirited lifestyle. Bobbers are spotted by looking at the large distance between the axles. They’re also pretty low, have a modified hard frame, wide wheel rims and carry a single seater.
Scrambler. These are the apple of the eye for most custom bike fans. These emerged in England in the ‘20s when they were used for off-road racing. These bikes are characterised by having spoked wheels, a smaller-than-usual tank, knobby tyres, padded seat, and high mounted exhaust pipes for ground clearance. Also, a number board is quite common too. These machines were designed for off-road and mud racing, for which they need those wide tyres and sturdy suspension. By the way, the BMW R45 in the picture above is a Scrambler.
Sounds simple enough, right? But it’s not. Many custom bikes have been crossed, creating a one-of-a-kind style for each one. Regardless of your favourite, Bolt Motor Co. can assist you in getting the bike of your dreams.
